Firmware: V14 preview topic

The Racing TrakBox firmware version V1.014 is under development

Currently the TrakBox dashboard web page has taken development priority but in hopes of rolling out a firmware update prior to the Oct 31, 2026 CFR finale event, development toward a firmware update has begun.

Proposed changes

Prioritize SD card module start up

  • increase robustness and error reporting
  • move SD start up in set up sequence

Refactor start up sequence

  • start SD module and sensors first
  • de-prioritize wifi set up
  • remove wifi delaying start up

Switch time input from RTC to GPS

  • log rtc in epoch mode until GPS acquires a signal
  • once GPS reports valid data switch to logging GPS time

As discussed in this other topic the battery should be able to hold the time between shut downs with a fresh battery. It is assumed that the battery the RTC comes with has lost it’s charge before they are installed in the units.

The requirement for a wifi connection is driven primarily by the need to sync the clock on start up and installing a fresh battery would alleviate this need. I have witnessed that the wifi setup is a pain point for new users. One of the important goals is to make set up and initial installation easy and quick.

The batteries are not rechargeable and are disposable but should hold a sufficient charge to run at least 2 - 3 years between replacements. The firmware should also be capable of detecting the battery has lost charge and needs replaced. The battery is user replaceable.

if the unit is configured to be an AP (soft access point) the unit would be able to sync with the phone’s time and not need internet access to sync with a network time server on the internet.

I believe the unit can be set up to both act as an AP or a wifi client.

It is planned to be able to change setting on the unit through a web page served by the unit.
