Racing TrakBox Firmware V0.15

Racing TrakBox Firmware beta Version 0.15 official release

github.com/MyRaceData/TRAKBOX/blob/main/snapshots/TRAKBOX.015

This version introduces logging of GPS heading and quaternion w, x, y and z

File Format:

millis,MM/DD/YYYY,HH:MM:SS,Latitude,Longitude,MPH,Altitude,Temp,Humid,Pres,Accel X,Accel Y, Accel Z,Gyro X,Gyro Y,Gyro Z,Heading,Quat W, Quat X, Quat Y , Quat Z

New Features:

This version introduces GPS derived heading and quaternion w, x, y and z logging from which clean stable Euler angles can be easily calculated. The altitude reading is now derived from the GPS instead of the environmental sensor.

This version was heavily optimized for outright logging speed and has undergone testing showing stable logging rates of 85 - 95 lines of data per second.

NOTE: This version does not start recording until GPS speed is greater then 5 miles per hour

NOTE: This version will halt if a microSD card is not installed

This version makes two assumptions that guided the design of the firmware. The first is that, because the real time phone speedometer has been removed, there is no logical reason to run the unit without an microSD card installed. The second presumption is that without an active GPS fix, the data is basically useless.
With these two assumptions in mind the phone display has been removed along with the async web server which improves logging speed. This version also relies solely on time as provided by the GPS. This version increases the GPS rate to 5Hz.

One of the major improvements in overall logging speed came from switching to the SSD1306ascii library by Bill Greiman for running the OLED display. This library is extremely efficient with system resources. Please see the link at the bottom of this document for more information about Bill’s great library.

This version also switches to Bill Greiman’s sdFat library for running the microSD card module. This allows any modern microSD card to be recognized and used without having to format the card.

Bill Greiman’s great OLED library:

I have run this firmware on the most recently assembled pre production Racing Trakbox for over 48 hours straight to stress test the unit. I can report the firmware is stable and records files perfectly as designed. The files run perfectly in the Racing TrakBox Dash. This is the fastest logging version so far and probably is getting close to this hardware combination’s maximum potential.
